Everyone who’s new to OpenSea needs to get acquainted with checking the metadata of any NFT on the platform. It is one way to see more information like names, descriptions, and transactions of any NFTs. In this guide, we’ll go over what metadata is and how to check NFT metadata on openSea.
What is NFTs metadata?
All objects have some information that identifies them. The object’s metadata tells you the object’s ID, its dimensions, how it was created, and who created it.
NFTs metadata is data that provides information like the name, description, color, transactional history, and any other information that the NFTs creator wants to include about his NFT.
The metadata of any NFTs may contain some large files and therefore usually hosted off-chain to avoid the cost of hosting large files on the Etheruem blockchain or any other blockchain network.
How To Check Metadata on Opensea
If you don’t know the process, checking the metadata of any NFTs can be daunting because it takes extra steps. In this section, we have outlined the steps you need to take to view the metadata of any NFTs.
Please note that this process does not work for some NFTs. In case it didn’t work for your desired NFTs, it means that the creators have hidden the metadata or have stored the metadata in another location.
Here is a step-by-step guide on how to check metadata on OpenSea:
Step 1: Access the market.
The first step to checking your metadata is to visit the openSea website and access the available NFTs. You can do this by hovering on the “explore Icon” at the top and clicking on “all NFTs.”
Step 2: Select the NFT for which you want to check the metadata.
Once you click on “All NFTs” from the “Explore” icon, you will be taken to the page where all NFTs available on OpenSea are listed. You can filter the NFTs by the chain type. Once you find your desired NFT, click on it.
In my case, I will select Beach Ape
Step 3: Click on the Contract address:
At the bottom left corner of the NFT you have selected, you will find a detail icon. Click on it. This will expand, showing you the contract address for the NFT. Then click on the contract address.
Step 4: Click on “contract” Icon
Once you scroll down the contract address page, you will find a “contract” icon as below. Click on it.
Step 5: Select “Read Contract”
Sep 6: Copy the Token URL.
Once you click on “read contract address,” you will find more information about the NFT token. Scroll down to find the Token URL (or Template URL). Then copy it.
Step 7: Add the NFT’s ID to the end of the token’s URL
Go back to the NFT’s detail page to copy its ID, then append it to the token url by replacing the characters in the box below with the token ID.
Step 8: View the Metadata.
After appending the token ID to the token URL, load it and you will find the metadata as shown below.
Disclaimer:
The location of the metadata of NFTs is not specific. At times, you may find them at the NFTs detail page (usually a json file), but most of the time, you are going to be able to find them with the process we showed you above.
